We’ve shared the differences between the two most common classifications of medical devices, disposables, and capital equipment. However, another category does exist- hardware.
Hardware Explained:
These Reps typically sell surgical instruments (needle holders, forceps, scissors, etc.). Hardware is used in one case and then sent to sterile processing, a department that sterilizes instruments for reuse on another patient.
Individual departments will frequently set aside money in their budget for hardware. They’ll have monthly funds available to make these purchases as needed.
The hardware usually only goes through the capital budget if it is a sizable purchase. Like capital device sales, you’re often compensated at a flat rate commission for hardware.
