Breaking Into the Industry

What are Associate Reps, Clinical Specialists, and Junior Reps?

These are entry-level sales positions found at medical device companies. They function as a SUPPORT role for a sales team- and are (essentially) synonymous with each other.

Even though “clinical” is in the name of one of the roles, it does not necessarily mean that you must come from a clinical background (we will share more about medical device sales training in a future post). For simplicity, we’ll refer to them as Associate Reps.

Now, what is meant by SUPPORT?

Typically there are anywhere from zero to a few of these positions within a region.

When a Rep needs to be in two places at once, Associate Reps help. Examples of activities include covering cases (attending medical procedures), making sales presentations, in-servicing (training medical staff on products/equipment), setting appointments, dropping off products, taking inventory to an account, and cold calling.

The Associate Rep takes on many responsibilities of a Rep, helping prepare them for taking over a future territory when a vacancy becomes available. However, before their promotion, the Associate Rep must fully comprehend clinical and product knowledge and have enhanced their sales acumen.
